hipdale's Journal I've been following the discussions in different Usenet groups over this latest Bush Scandal. From the first day it was voted on the patriot act has frighten me. Too many of our precious liberties have been compromised for the sake of security. The act to me at least was just one more slice taken out of our rights as citizens. I know the law in this case gives the Justice department 3 days to obtain a warrant for a wiretap. This as been the law since the late 40's. I believe that not even one nanosecond of a phone tap should be done without a warrant. In the immediate aftermath of 9-11 the Congress reacted instead of using reason. The result was the huge new department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. In my opinion neither were necessary. The sad thing is that the general public isn't paying that much attention to this scandal. The scandal card has been over played by both political parties to the point that people have tuned it out. I suspect that this latest scandal will be old news in a couple weeks and something new will take it's place and this is why more and more of our rights will be taken from us. Because we are not paying attention to what our government is doing or we tell ourselves that we have nothing to hide that we will wake up to find ourselves as Patrick Henry said wearing the "bonds of slavery" Current mood: To Clayton Moore From Standards and Practices We have read your poem The Night Before Christmas We feel to be acceptable for broadcast the following changes will have to be made. Twas the Night before Christmas Poem Not every person celebrates the holiday of Xmas please change this to Holiday Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, Since hanging stockings are flammable placing them on the chimney is a fire hazard so should not be encouraged, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. With recent warnings about childhood obesity and sugar laden foods we feel you should change this line to the following: "While Visions of fresh fruits and vegetables danced in their heads." And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, This enforces the patriarchal stereotype of Society and leaves out nontraditional Familes. Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" Please remember that commanding and shouting at Wildlife is a form of abuse As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. Forcing Reindeer to pull a heavy sled is bad enough but now you make them fly. Please change And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. Forcing someone to use the chimney will cause them to risk server burns. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, The wearing of fur is not permitted. And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, Please make sure these toys are safe. And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. Please change to "Looked like a Salesperson" His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, Smoking is not permitted to be used. And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! This enforces the stereotype of obese persons as being happy people. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, Please change to vertically challenged And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!" Thank you for your time please make these changes and resubmit as soon as possible so that we may have them in time for our Happy RamaHanuKwanzMas Special. Current mood: I just started a new project. I've created a new yahell group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RivertonC It's not just to share recipes but for crafts and other projects. Current mood: It's sometimes only under the fires of adversity that our true nature shows it self be it noble or savage. We get a contrast between two ships that have gone through hell and back and what we discover isn't pretty. Still even in the mists of barbarism a ray of hope will find away to shine through. A few of my thoughts on Pegasus 1) Baltar took one step closer to regaining his humanity. He is becoming less like a cold machine this season. Could this be Six’s real plan for him? His shedding tears over the treatment of Gina and admitting he loved Six was something I never expected to see. 2) Ron Moore delivered a hit right to my solar plexus with the admission of the gang rape of Gina and the attempted rape of Boomer. I don’t care what the cylons have done there is no excuse for rape. The rapist got what he deserved and the bragging pilots should be sent right to the brig. 3) Adama slowly letting Cain hang herself. She was breaking up a successful team but there was nothing he could do until she crossed the line but when she did he was ready to do what he had to do. 4) Apollo and Starbuck got took down a notch by a real SOB. Why not count the kills? I think Both Starbuck and Apollo realize that pilots that worry about how many kills they have don’t make good team players. Secondly with everything they’ve been through they worry about how many of their pilots won’t be coming back more than how many raiders they take down. 5) Cain is not worthy of her rank. She as cracked from all the pressure she has been under and runs her ship using fear. Only those that are as warped as she is would have any loyalty towards her. The Pegasus isn’t a Colonial warship it’s a pirate ship. No doubt some of the crew will be worth salvaging but those that can’t be will most likely spend their time aboard the prison ship. Many thanks to Ron Moore and his crew for giving us one of the most gripping hours on TV. And using the play on the a word the New BSG Haters use for the New Galactica GINO= Galactica in name only by naming P-Six Gina in the script was great! Current mood: We know how to goto the moon so why is NASA dragging it's feet? Nasa for one things seems to wants to keep reinventing the wheel. Another reason is Federal funding for NASA gets getting smaller and smaller. Congress in order to keep increasing spending for social programs cuts everything else. What is needed is to put someone in charge of NASA that has a real vision and the balls to demand increase funding. Of Course having someone in the Whitehouse that understands the potential spin-offs of a real return to the moon couldn't hurt. Imagine the breakthroughs in fuel cells, indoor environmental systems, computers, and knowledge of how to survive in hostile environments that would take place in a real program to return to the moon. Instead we get a vision of sending 4 people to the moon by 2018 for a whopping seven days! Yeah we will really be pushing the envelope there. There is no real vision not from the White House, The Congress, NASA or even more sadly the public. Here is what I would do in I was in the Oval Office. I would give a Speech before a join session of Congress outline an ambitious plan to colonize the moon by at least 2015 if not sooner. I would outline all the spin-off benefits of such a project. Next I would appoint a visionary and can do person to be in charge of NASA. I would enlist the aid of Science Fiction personalities in Public Service Announcements to keep the vision a live. I would enlist the United States private sector to help fund the project with a matching grant program. I would welcome any Nation that wanted to join in the effort but make it clear this is an United States project. I would split off the non man space program into a new agency freeing NASA to put all it efforts behind the man program. I would selects colonist from many different backgrounds not just science and engineering. Oh the the article that provoke this rant! http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto Current mood: I've been working on an internet science fiction magazine along the lines of Analog Magazine. Well I am ready to launch it today. So far I have only Science News, Articles, and Commentary with articles in them. Now I'm just a poor slob and can't afford to pay for contributors but if you could settle for just a by-line I would like to here from you. On Anger By Delbert McGill Oh Anger, your road I will not travel; Oh Anger, your embrace I will not accept; Oh Anger, at your wonders I will not marvel; Oh Anger, Enough of the bitter tears I have wept; You lie in wait like a thief; To steal peace and joy from me; To steal love's green leaf; To blind me so my belove I can not see; You wait with a blade so cold; To kill my mind, spirit, and soul; To leave me lonely and old; Your lying song on makes me bold; I reject you and your evil; I will fight you tooth and nail; Until your stronghold is rubble; Until your armies wails; © July 2001 By Delbert W McGill Current mood: Ok I've had it with lefties and righties finger pointing while there are still people needing rescue. I have had it with Luddites on both sides that refuse to see we have to look beyond to day and have a long range energy policy. Rush L goes out of his way to dismiss hybrid cars, Hydrogen fuel cell and other alternatives while his counter parts on left turn their noses up at nuclear power and more drilling in the gulf. Now is not the time to point fingers, it is the time to come together to heal, rebuild and to come up with real plans for the next time. Current mood:
